Japanese Language in the Dojo
You will find that we use certain budo-specific Japanese terminology in the dojo. We do this for a couple of different reasons. On one hand, it gives us a sense of tradition and connection to Japan, the birthplace of the arts we practice. Secondly, believe it or not, Japanese is actually sometimes better-suited to describing the things we need to talk about during the course of a class.
If you’re not fluent in Japanese (or don’t wish to learn the language), don’t worry. You’ll hear it often enough (in context) that you’ll pick it up easily and won’t even realize you’re learning the language. Also, we teach (mostly) in English.
